A Hot and Copper Sky

Posted by Megan Arkenberg with 5 comments
Not a reference to the wildfires, I promise. "All in a Hot and Copper Sky" is my latest science fiction story in Lightspeed. I talk about story structure, Mars, and scientific women in the Author Spotlight.

Speaking of hot and copper skies, I went to San Francisco with a group of friends today to see the J. M. W. Turner: Painting Set Free exhibit at the De Young museum. It was a beautifully done exhibit, and quite crowded ("I couldn't see the people for the paintings," Oscar Wilde may have said). My favorite images were Sunrise with Sea Monsters (Cthulhu ftaghn!),  The Hero of a Hundred Fights ("There are fairies of the furnace as of the wood," John Ruskin says), and 'Hurrah! for the Whaler Erebus! Another Fish!' (not to be confused with the other Erebus).

I also bought a postcard of The Angel Standing in the Sun, which illustrates Revelation 19:17--one of the verses that inspired "How Many Miles to Babylon?" I was delighted to note the "birds of midheaven" in the upper left:

The apocalypse is a Big Deal

By which I mean, The End is Now is a Kindle "Big Deal" (99 cents!) until January 25th.

My story in this anthology, "Twilight of the Music Machines," also made it onto Tangent's "Recommended Reading" list for 2014. Those who like this sort of thing, etc.

Asimov's

Posted by Megan Arkenberg with 5 comments
I received my contributor's copy of the June 2012 Asimov's in the mail yesterday. I'm sure it goes without saying that I'm thrilled my story "Final Exam" has found such a great home...but I'll say it anyway. This may be my favorite of all the stories I've written. Yes, that's a hint--go check it out!

New Year at Lightspeed

Posted by Megan Arkenberg with No comments
My story "How Many Miles to Babylon?" appears in this week's issue of Lightspeed (along with an author spotlight).

As you're probably aware, Lightspeed and Fantasy Magazine have now merged into one super-fantastic magazine, which means Lightspeed publishes two stories this week. And the other one in this issue is "Blue Lace Agate" by the indescribably awesome Sarah Monette. Pardon me while I fangirl in the corner.

Hope your New Year is a safe and happy one.
