A Hot and Copper Sky

Posted by Megan Arkenberg with 7 comments
Not a reference to the wildfires, I promise. "All in a Hot and Copper Sky" is my latest science fiction story in Lightspeed. I talk about story structure, Mars, and scientific women in the Author Spotlight.

Speaking of hot and copper skies, I went to San Francisco with a group of friends today to see the J. M. W. Turner: Painting Set Free exhibit at the De Young museum. It was a beautifully done exhibit, and quite crowded ("I couldn't see the people for the paintings," Oscar Wilde may have said). My favorite images were Sunrise with Sea Monsters (Cthulhu ftaghn!),  The Hero of a Hundred Fights ("There are fairies of the furnace as of the wood," John Ruskin says), and 'Hurrah! for the Whaler Erebus! Another Fish!' (not to be confused with the other Erebus).

I also bought a postcard of The Angel Standing in the Sun, which illustrates Revelation 19:17--one of the verses that inspired "How Many Miles to Babylon?" I was delighted to note the "birds of midheaven" in the upper left:

The Nerdiest Pumpkin Ever?

Well, yes. This was last year's Holloween pumpkin, a tribute to M. R. James:

This year's pumpkin (which may actually be a gourd) is much more elaborate and even nerdier--a tribute to Arthur Machen's "The White People." More pictures will follow.

Not quite what I meant by "Character Sketch"

There's a reason I'm a writer, not an artist. However, I've decided to share the fruits of my other, less-developed talent with you, dear reader...

His name is Sylvain, and I promise I won't be hurt if you couldn't tell he was a "he" right away. I've yet to master the art of distinct facial features. They make those wonderful little wooden dolls for body posturing, but no one seems to have invented one for masculine faces.

Mirror Dance Updates

Posted by Megan Arkenberg with No comments
I am in need of one more poem for the Spring 2009 issue of Mirror Dance. There is one fiction and one poetry slot open in the themed Summer issue, "Villains and Antiheroes." Finally, I have nonfiction/opinion/art slots open in both these issues; the Summer item should relate to the theme, but I will consider a wide variety for Spring.
